According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), GDP is expected to reach US$391.0 billion in 2015, compared to US$211.9 billion in 2010. This positive economic performance is expected to result in increasing drug consumption. In demographic terms, Egypt has an estimated population of 84.8 million in 2010, which creates a constant demand for pharmaceuticals. However, Egypt’s demographic indicators reveal extremely high birth and infant mortality rates, which could impact negatively on the health system.
Healthcare provision is highly fragmented. While multiple providers offer greater patient choice, they can also add an element of confusion and lead to fragmentation of the healthcare system. The healthcare system has been in a transitory period for some time. While this should eventually result in a more modernised, efficient system, the delay has allegedly caused standards to slip in the public sector, with quality of provision varying between facilities.
Egypt is one of the leading pharmaceutical markets in Africa and the Middle East. The private pharmacy sector has increased by a high double digit CAGR in recent years, but per capita consumption is still low. Espicom expects that the market will continue to grow by a high CAGR in the 2010-2015 period. Considering opportunities beyond BRIC pharmaceutical markets, Egypt is becoming a very attractive market for multinational pharmaceutical companies focused on emerging markets.
The pharmaceutical industry has enjoyed a period of considerable development in recent years. There is a strong domestic production sector and while the majority is destined for the domestic market and imports play an important role, Egypt has emerged as a leading exporter of pharmaceuticals to Arab, Asian and Eastern European markets. Regulatory advancements in the internal market will increase manufacturing opportunities, although concerns remain regarding drug price referencing, introduced in 2009.
Public production represents around one tenth of the private pharmacy sector by value and nearly two tenths by volume. Public production is represented by the state-owned holding company HoldiPharma, which also owns a couple of pharmaceutical distributors. Due to increasing regulation affecting the distribution sector and the storage of biologics, HoldiPharma inaugurated its first cold chain pharmacy in 2009; biologic production is very expensive so most biologics are imported by one of Holdipharma’s distributors.
