The population stands at an estimated 4.5 million in 2010, of whom 18.0% are aged 65 or over. Croatia is on track for EU accession by 2011 following the arrest of the war crimes suspect General Ante Gotovina. Around 69% of the pharmaceutical market is supplied by imports. Germany and Slovenia were the leading suppliers in 2007, accounting for over 30% of imports; countries from the EU-27 were the suppliers of 81% of all imports. The value of imports increased by over 16% in 2007.

Domestic production is dominated by Pliva, which was acquired by the US company, Barr Pharmaceuticals, in October 2006. The combination of Barr and Pliva creates the third largest global generic pharmaceutical company, in terms of revenue. In 2007, Teva acquired Barr Pharmaceuticals and thus Pliva became part of the Teva Group. Pliva reported annual sales of US$1.1 billion in year ending December 2007.
