Serbia overcame many of the political and economic problems it faced following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. However, the ongoing dispute over Kosovo’s status has recently brought disorder to the political scene, with the Serbian government being dissolved shortly after the autonomous region declared its independence in February 2008. The main problem revolves around future relations with the EU; the main political parties are divided on whether or not to continue with EU integration, as the majority of EU members recognise Kosovo’s independence, which is in stark contrast to Serbia’s standpoint. Although the results of the parliamentary elections in May 2008 will shape future plans, the president of Serbia is Western-leaning and remains in favour of attaining EU membership.
The condition of the healthcare system is gradually improving, with investments from foreign agencies financing the refurbishment or development of new health centres. However, much equipment remains outdated and there is still a surplus of medical personnel. The private healthcare sector is slowly expanding, although currently it only serves a wealthy minority.
The medical device industry in Serbia is very small; only US$12.8 million worth of equipment was exported in 2006. Manufacturers have also been recently affected by changes in legislation, including the enforcement of GMP standards. However, a new organisation responsible for the registration of devices was established in the latter part of 2004, which should make the authorisation process more efficient.
