CAMBRIDGE, England, February 28/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Autonomy Corporation plc (LSE: AU) a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that MerseyBIO, a biotechnology incubator organization, has implemented Autonomy's technology to power a network for the biotechnology community in Merseyside. The service, called esymbio, which has gone live this morning, aims to create an infrastructure that will foster collaboration between biotechnology companies, investors and public bodies to drive the development of the region's life sciences sector. The project is backed by public institutions such as the University of Liverpool and the North West Genetic Knowledge Park.
The development of life-changing and commercially successful pharmaceutical products relies on the close cooperation between academic and private research ventures, commercial organizations and public institutions. By building a joint portal for the biotechnology sector in Merseyside and beyond, esymbio brings these different groups together for the first time, encouraging an active exchange of ideas, knowledge and experience. Autonomy's advanced collaboration and expertise functionalities allow portal users to identify experts in their field automatically, establish contact and share information. Biotechnology companies can locate similar businesses in their sector, researchers are alerted to business opportunities and individuals have access to information on groups providing consultancy, manufacturing, packaging or design services for the industry.
As Autonomy has the unique expertise to aggregate content regardless of its format or source, the technology is further able to manage and locate all information stored in esymbio's databases through a single front end. Capitalizing on Autonomy's intelligence to understand the content of information rather than merely relying on metadata or keywords to locate relevant content, the right data can be found fast and effortlessly, opening a wealth of knowledge resources to the biotechnology community.
"The aim of esymbio is to provide a first meeting point for the industry, support the development of innovative products and create a prospering biotechnology sector", said Dr Geoff Wainwright, MerseyBIO Incubator Manager. Autonomy will help us to achieve our goals by supporting the exchange of information and providing a comprehensive knowledge network for the community."
Charlotte Herbert, Global Marketing Manager Autonomy, commented, "We are delighted to be involved in the esymbio project. Like many other organizations across all vertical sectors, esymbio will benefit from Autonomy's strength in connecting information and people at the right time, helping businesses to leverage the maximum value from their knowledge assets."
Autonomy's unique Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL) integrates unstructured, semi-structured and structured information from multiple repositories through an understanding of their content. Autonomy grants organizations the flexibility to use advanced information retrieval or legacy-based approaches. At the heart of Autonomy's software is its ability to process text, voice and video and identify and rank the main concepts within them. It then automatically categorizes, links, summarizes, personalizes and delivers that information. Autonomy's technology also drives collaboration across different departments and interest groups and enables them to effectively leverage expertise. Autonomy's infrastructure technology is used to automate operations within enterprise information portals, customer relationship management, knowledge management, business intelligence and e-business applications, among others.
